McNinney's Votes Probably Doom Greens

Well, there goes another third party in American politics. Cynthia McKinney attracted about 140,000 votes on Tuesday, which sounds like a lot until you start comparing it to other candidates. She got fewer votes than Barack Obama and John McCain. And Ralph Nader and Bob Barr. And Chuck Baldwin. She finished sixth, beating out Alan Keyes.

It actually was a modest improvement for the Greens; she got about 0.12% of the vote on Tuesday as compared to 0.10% for their prior candidate who was--anybody? Anybody? Bueller?--who was David Cobb. Of course, it's a huge dropoff from the heady days of 2000 when the Greens actually got 2.7 million people to cast a ballot for Ralph Nader.
